2017 Legacy of Leadership Award!
Helena Stegman, Small Voice-Big Impact
Her IA Journey from Victim to Victor!
Helena is this year’s Legacy of Leadership Award honoree, an outstanding accomplishment for any adult, but for a police officer’s 9-year-old daughter, who was a sexual abuse victim of a relative, it is astonishing what she has accomplished! Through her very courageous work in play therapy, Helena quite literally found her voice as her counselor suggested to her parents that they give her a creative outlet in singing lessons since she was responding so well to music and play therapy. Helena moved from being a victim to a survivor of sexual abuse to singing off-Broadway and around the country. She is writing a children’s book to encourage other kiddos to ‘Tell & Keep Telling’ and wants to begin doing public speaking in schools. At this young age, she has already composed a song to help other sexual abuse victims. This young girl is doing more in her nine short years of life to impact others than some adults do in a lifetime!
So, do you want to change the world one hurting heart at a time? Then, let’s play golf and make an impact!
Your Participation & Sponsorship Benefits Our
Victim Assistance Programs
One in three girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before they turn 18 years of age by someone they know! These are reported cases only! Many more children are prevented from reporting the crimes committed against them, making the real numbers so much higher, especially for boys! Our counselors see these children face-to-face every day and do our best to help them recover! For over 2 decades, Innovative Alternatives, Inc.’s Victim Assistance Program has served between 850 and 2,000 victims of crime annually. Almost half are sexually or physically abused children, many are adults abused as children as well as numerous other crimes—up to and including family members of homicide victims! IA provides up to 6 months of FREE counseling & many other services to assist in healing and recovery from violent crimes.
IA receives an annual grant from the Governor’s Office of the State of Texas, Criminal Justice Division of $730,400, to deliver these services… in order to keep receiving those dollars here in our community to help crime victims become VICTORS, IA is required by the grant terms to raise an additional $183,500 annually. This seems like a daunting task, but with every donation, every sponsored golf team and golfer, and every silent & live auction donor and buyer, together, we get closer and closer to this meeting this goal! Together we are strong, together we can rise above, and be the voice of victory to a victim of violent crime!
Your support of IA is helping children like Helena find healing,
renewed strength, and potential!
