The Greenland Parent Organization (GPO) was established to provide support and financial assistance to the Greenland Central School (GCS) in its basic  mission of teaching, child enrichment, guidance and the fundamental development of values and appreciation of fairness.

The GPO is dedicated, through the efforts and commitment of all parents and guardians of GCS students, to work with the principal, teachers and administrative personnel of the GCS to help insure the students, both current and future, have the opportunities to grow and develop as caring, active, enlightened citizens and civic leaders.

The GPO, in addition to donating its time and energy, will also endeavor to raise moneys through various activities and events to financially assist its mutual goals.

The Golf Tournament is the sole fund raiser for the GPO Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to a high school senior accepted to a 2 or 4 year accredited school of higher learning who is a graduate of Greenland Central School attending grades 6-8.

Testimonials:

I am a past recipient of the GPO scholarship, and I want to respond to your invitation regarding the upcoming GPO Scholarship Golf Tournament. While I will not be able to attend the tournament or banquet for work-related reasons, I would like to share a few thoughts on how the scholarship has positively impacted my recently completed college experience. I have also attached a photo as you requested.

First, I would like to thank you and the entire GPO organization for the recognition and substantial financial support of the scholarship. With a double major at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, textbook costs exceeded my budget. The security in knowing that the scholarship would cover these textbook costs was invaluable to my success academically. Many other financial commitments such as lab fees, club dues, food and laundry costs, and other small day-to-day expenditures became more manageable as a result of the scholarship, and I was able to experience more outside of the classroom as a result. It allowed me to participate in meaningful extracurricular activities including mentoring at-risk inner city elementary school children after school in West Philadelphia on how to play chess. I also volunteered regularly for Habitat for Humanity in New Jersey.

In addition to the monetary support, the scholarship boosted my confidence as I advanced my learning.  I graduated on May 13th, 2013 with a double major: a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Economics. I have accepted a position to work in the oil and gas industry at Schlumberger Ltd, the world’s largest oil and gas exploration company. I will work as a field engineer (petroleum engineer) which will allow me to travel nationally and internationally. I am starting work on May 19th in Houston. My specific job will be wirelining, which is using computer data obtained from cables to predict and model the composition of the earth below its surface. I am excited to be starting out in such a dynamic field. The strong skills in Math and Science that I developed at Greenland carried me through both high school and college; I am very grateful to the teachers, administration, staff, and parents of Greenland Central for the quality education that I received during the nine years that I was there.

During the golf tournament on September 7th, I will be at a four month assignment at Schlumberger training center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, but I will be keeping everyone at home playing golf in my thoughts. I hope that the day is as warm in Greenland as it is in Abu Dhabi!

Again, thank you very much for the support over the past four years! I hope to support the GPO Scholarship in a more tangible way in the future.

Sincerely,
Blake Gendron

My family has resided in Greenland for many years. I attended Greenland Central School
and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 2007. In 2011, I graduated cum laude
from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science and a minor in Agricultural
and Applied Economics. After working for 18 months in the dairy industry in both
Kansas and Massachusetts, I decided to return to classroom and am currently pursuing
a Master’s degree in Animal Science at Pennsylvania State University. As a past recipient
of the GPO college scholarship, I appreciate the financial help it offered with tuition and
buying textbooks.

My name is Eric Mauer and I am a Senior Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Delaware. I was awarded the GPO Scholarship three years ago as an aspiring college freshman. This award has helped me to fund my education for each of my four years of school and for that I am incredibly grateful. It has helped to offset the rising cost of tuition and reduce the debt I take on as a college student. Greenland was a special place to grow up as a kid and I am honored that the community has helped me in my educational pursuits. This goes to show how lucky I am to be a part of it.
