Pickleball is an inclusive, engaging sport that has captivated the nation. Heralded to be “a cross of tennis, pingpong, and badminton,” (Mullen) it is no surprise that it has become so widely popular as a fun way to connect with others and stay active.
Aside from being an enjoyable sport for people of all ages, pickleball is the single fastest-growing sport in the United States. After being invented by Barney McCallum in 1965, who aptly named the game after his dog “Pickles,” (USA Pickleball) pickleball began to rapidly pick up popularity years later during the pandemic as a way for people to stay active while remaining a safe distance away from others.
Pickleball appears quite similar to tennis, but has some different rules and overall play styles. For example, pickleball rules state that a serve must be made underhanded, and both the serve and the return must bounce, both of which differ from tennis. Check out USA Pickleball for a more in-depth explanation of rules, regulations, and playing tips.
Now that you have a better understanding of what pickleball is, one question remains:
Naturally, it’s a good idea to cater fundraising efforts to what is most popular at the time. So, after learning that pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country, a great next step is to find out how you can use this sport to bring the community together in support of the organization you seek to benefit.
A pickleball tournament is a great way to fundraise! Start by appointing a director and selecting a management software (we think BirdEase is a great way to go!). From there, you’ll need a suitable location that can host your estimated turnout.
You’ll also need to set a budget and remain mindful that the point of a fundraiser is to, well, fundraise! After factoring in your biggest cost (most commonly the venue, if you’re paying to host there), you’ll have a great framework to price your registration options and sponsorship opportunities accordingly to ensure you’re not just breaking even, but coming out of your event with enough funds to contribute to your intended cause.
Another key part of hosting a tournament is ensuring that you’re publicizing it enough. This means flyers, newsletters, social media posts, sharing details on your pre-existing website, notifying email lists you may already have, and encouraging personal contacts to spread the word. Also make sure to encourage volunteers to sign up and help!
Hosting a pickleball league for charity is a great way to invite your community to get involved with your organization and/or cause time and time again. By inviting people to sign up for the year––or another period of time you see fit––and hosting weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly (again, up to your discretion) pickleball events, you’ll be able to retain some people passionate about pickleball, fundraising for your cause, or hopefully both!
Remember to price your sign-up fees accordingly with what it’s costing you to hold the events through your league. You can also keep a donation page on your league website live year-round to accept additional contributions, especially for those who want to support you, but can’t fully commit to the league. Do all of this and more with BirdEase’s site and software, all in one!
Also remember to spread the word about your league to ensure you’re garnering enough members. This means exhausting all your resources! Flyers, social media posts, a feature on your website, asking others to promote the opportunity, an ad in local press, and other opportunities of this nature are a must!
Just because you want to fundraise with the sport of pickleball doesn’t mean you have to host a tournament if you don’t want to! Consider dedicating a day to inviting your local community to have a recreational day playing pickleball at a local court. Take donations and general admission ticket sales with BirdEase. Remember to promote the event through social media, flyers, on your site, and through word of mouth in your community.
